Consultation $800 MXN
It is the first question almost everyone has, and it deserves an honest answer: it depends — but not vaguely. It depends on concrete things you can understand and compare. This page explains what they are.
The surgeon's fee is only one part. The total for an operation is built from four blocks:
It would be easy to write «hernia from $X» and it would look good in a search result. The problem is that such a number is almost always lower than what the person ends up paying, because it leaves out the hospital, the anaesthesia and the stay. The surprise arrives later, once the patient has decided and is about to be operated on.
Instead, you are given the complete quote at the consultation, itemised block by block, so you can compare it with other options on the same basis. Comparing a professional fee against an all-inclusive package is not comparing.
This is scheduled surgery, not something to arrange on the day you land. It needs a consultation, whatever tests the case calls for, the operation itself, and at least one follow-up visit before you travel home. Flying too soon after abdominal surgery is not advisable, and how long to wait depends on how your recovery goes.
Write before booking flights so the timeline can be set out for your own case — including what can be done remotely beforehand and what cannot.
With Mexican major medical insurance a large part of the cost is covered and you pay the deductible and co-insurance set by your policy. How much falls to you depends on your contract, not on the procedure. Bring your policy number to the consultation: checking coverage before scheduling avoids the most uncomfortable situation of all, which is finding out what was not covered when a date has already been set. See which insurers are accepted.
With a policy issued outside Mexico, most plans work on a reimbursement basis: you pay here and claim afterwards. The office provides the medical report and the itemised documentation your insurer asks for. What each plan reimburses varies a great deal, so it is worth confirming with your insurer before scheduling.
Private patients are seen as well. In that case the hospital chosen weighs more than in any other scenario, and it is decided with you at the consultation — not for you — taking the procedure and your budget into account.
$800 MXN. It includes the assessment and the full surgical quote.
Surgical fees, anaesthesia, hospital and materials, itemised. If something is not included, you are told what it is — that matters as much as what is.
Payment terms are set by each hospital, not by the office. It is worth asking at the consultation, because it changes depending on where the surgery is done.
Planned surgery almost always works out better, and not only for money: it lets you arrive fully assessed, choose the hospital and review insurance calmly. An emergency is handled wherever and whenever it can be.
In Mexican pesos. If you are comparing with prices at home, use the exchange rate on the day, and compare the full quote against the full quote.
